When It Doesn’t Go to Plan I wanted to share a story and some lessons learned with you today. The last few weeks of marathon training have been hard. Not physically, but emotionally. If you work with me weekly, you know that another one of my dogs was recently diagnosed with cancer. The days since then have been filled with vet appointments, researching treatment options, and a constant ache in my chest, wondering what is the best decision is moving forward. My runs didn’t feel like an outlet...

Recently, I have been reviewing my running biomechanics notes (I can never stop learning)....And I wanted to share some tid-bits of information with all of you! When I was first learning about kinetics and kinematics, I was overwhelmed, but also amazed at what happens at each major joint and muscle group when we run! Don’t Underestimate the Force of Your Muscles Did you know that every stride you take while running sends up to 2–3 times your body weight through your body due to the ground...

Hi there! I wanted to take time today to discuss the core.... I talk a lot about hip and ankle strength, but the core is just as important when you want to run stronger and more efficiently! Most runners focus on leg strength and aerobic capacity, but a weak core can lead to: 🚨 Poor running form (especially when fatigued) 🚨 Increased injury risk (hello, low back pain!) 🚨 Inefficient movement (slower paces & wasted energy) What Is the “Core” for Runners? Your core is more than just abs. We...

Hello! Given that knee pain is the most common injury among runners, I thought it would be worthwhile to dive in. In previous newsletters we looked at Runner's Knee, but today let's talk about knee osteoarthritis, degeneration, or "wear and tear" on the knee. Does Running Really Cause Knee Problems? Debunking One of the Biggest Myths One of the most common concerns I hear from runners and non-runners alike is: “Isn’t running bad for your knees?” In fact, I am on the receiving end of this...

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had the phrase, “It’s about the journey, not the destination,” running through my mind. I think about it often, repeating it to myself, and truly believe it. Maybe a little too much, especially when it comes to marathon training. The journey is where the work happens: the growth, the learning, the setbacks, the breakthroughs, the exhaustion, the fun, the tears, the joy, all of the emotions. It’s months of showing up, putting in the miles, and pushing...

Hello there 👋 Let's chat about running performance today. I bet we all have some idea of what that might entail. And most of you probably already know it’s not always about the quantity of miles you run, but the quality of those miles AND the quality of the other aspects of your training. This includes rest, nutrition/hydration, sleep, stress management, and even knowing your worth and identity outside of running. Today, we’ll focus on the exercises and activities outside of running that...

Key Mobility Areas to Pay Attention to as a Runner I often get asked, “What stretches should I be doing as a runner?” So, I thought I’d break it down today- not just the what, but the why. When we think about mobility, the focus usually goes straight to the lower body (and for good reason), but there’s more to it than just a quick hamstring stretch. 🔑 Lower Body Mobility Essentials Here are the key areas I want every runner to have adequate mobility in: 1️⃣ Hip Extension:Can you get your leg...

Hello! This week, I had the pleasure of working with a new runner, someone just beginning their journey. And it inspired what I wanted to share this week with all of you. A Fresh PerspectiveWatching their excitement and eagerness to grow brought me so much joy and excitement for them. It made me stop and reflect on my running journey. It brought me back to the early days when I knew NOTHING about running when aches and pains were treated with ice and NSAIDs, and I felt I needed to stretch and...

Hello 👋 I wish there were an easy button for rehabbing an injury or hitting a certain goal. I think we tend to seek out the easy way first, putting off starting the hard work (which we know deep down inside is what we should actually be prioritizing!). I see this in the form of injured runners asking first about having a run assessment so they can find "what is wrong". I also see this in runners who blame their injuries on their shoes. But often those are the areas that will help the least....
